<p>Agarikon (<i>Fomes officinalis</i>) is one of the largest and longest living mushrooms in the world, some individual specimens known to be as old as 50 years. This needs to be seen in perspective of the fact that Agarikon starts out growing on already mature trees. It requires old growth forests to survive.</p>
<p><i>Fomes officinalis</i> is first mentioned as a medicinal mushroom by Greek physician Dioscorides in the <i><u>Materia Medica</i></u> of 65 B.C. where it was listed as a remedy for tuberculosis. This makes it the oldest medicinal mushroom in Western literature. [25] Written records and oral traditions from Poland and other areas of Europe suggest that <i>Fomes officinalis</i> was in fact the principal medicinal mushroom of ancient Europe as a whole, not only Greece.</p>
<p>It may be a species of a bygone era. Agarikon is practically extinct in Europe. [146] Most remaining Agarikon mushrooms are now found in the moist old growth rain forests of western North America. Fortunately, it can be cultivated, so there is no immediate risk of losing the genetic material. Paul Stamets business Fungi Perfecti based in Washington State grows it, as does the company Mushroom Harvest out of Ohio.</p>
<p>There is little modern research on the medicinal use of Agarikon extract but traditional use of this medicinal mushroom included tuberculosis (<i>Mycobacterium tuberculosis</i>) and pneumonia (<i>Bacillus pneumoniae</i> and others). It's also been used topically as a poultice to relieve muscle and skeletal pain.</p>
<p>Supporting this information is a Polish article from 2001 by K. Grzywnowics titled <i><u>Medicinal mushrooms in Polish folk medicine</u></i>. While it was still common in Poland, <i>Fomes officinalis</i> was used to treat lung conditions like coughing and asthma, and skeletal conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, but also open bleeding and infected wounds. In Polish tradition, <i>Fomes officinalis</i> tea was considered a life prolonging elixir. [147]</p>
<p>In North America, it is believed that Agarikon extract was used by Native Americans as protection from smallpox and other diseases brought over by the Europeans. But there is no definite written record of this information. The Haida Native American mythological tradition also retains a connection between Agarikon and the female creator spirit Raven, and with female sexuality.</p>
<p>Although rarely researched by modern medicine, two studies did report a strong immune boosting effect in subjects who were given <i>Fomes officinalis</i> extract. [148, 149]</p>
<p>Finally, a word of caution: Two of the common name synonyms for Agarikon (<i>Fomes officinalis</i>) are "Quinine Conk" and "Quinine Fungus," due to the quinine-like bitter taste of the mushroom. However, <i>Fomes officinalis</i> does not actually contain the compound quinine and is not known to be effective against malaria.</p>

<p>With all the different fad diets out there, how are you going to choose the best one for losing arm fat? I believe that it has become increasingly difficult to select the right diet. </p>
<p>But don't panic, I'm here to the rescue.</p>
<p>Here are 6 reasons why arm fat and fasting don't mix:</p>
<p><b>1. Metabolic meltdown.</b> Fasting produces the fastest drop in metabolic rate of any other diet. And once your metabolism drops, you'll burn less calories around the clock.</p>
<p><b>2. Massive rebounds.</b> Expect an enormous rebound in arm fat gain once you get off of the fast. Why? Because during fasting your active tissues have dumped water and your fat storing enzymes have up-regulated. When you start eating normal you'll gain fat and water very quickly.</p>
<p><b>3. Non-sustainability.</b> You can only fast for so long. After a certain point, the need to eat will be too great. If you keep on fasting your health will be in danger.</p>
<p><b>4. Intense feelings of hunger.</b> Fasting is painful. Ask anybody who's tried it. The urge to eat everything under the sun will haunt you day in and day out. You'll dream about food</p>
<p><b>5. Energy of a slug.</b> Eventually, your energy levels will devolve into that of a slug. Without food coming in, your body will turn to lean muscle protein for energy. And converting muscle protein to energy is extremely inefficient.</p>
<p><b>6. High frequency sickness.</b> Without enough food coming in, your body will not be able to fight off sickness very well. Expect a much higher rate of sickness when on a fast.</p>
<p>Are you still excited about trying that fast? I hope not. For the most part, fasting is not a good approach for women wishing to get toned arms and lose arm fat. There are much easier and effective dieting methods for getting sexy arms. Besides, fasting is NOT sustainable. So why do it in the first place? Getting lean arms doesn't have to be so painful!</p>

<p>Are you tired of feeling small and want to know how to look taller? You would be surprised how much a wardrobe alteration and a change of attitude can do! These aren't the only ways to make your body taller-by keeping a healthy diet and good posture, you can even prevent many bone damaging ailments that often occur as you age, including shrinkage.</p>
<p>Let us first talk about your wardrobe. You already be dressing to make you biggest assets stand out, but did you know you could use your clothes to make you look taller too? You could do this by wearing clothes of a similar color, particularly darker ones. And for even more of a height enhancer you could add thin vertical stripes to give you more length.</p>
<p>If you clothes than contrast a lot - such as black pants with a light blue shirt, you will look shorter. It creates a visible line that breaks you body up and makes you lose height - especially if your pants are above your waist. Also, for how to look taller, steer clear of patterns with plaid or polka dots in them. And wear clothes that fits you perfectly, and gives the illusion of you having a longer torso and limbs.</p>
<p>Wearing the correct shoes and also help you become taller. High heels and shoe lifts are great for making you look taller. And to make your feet look bigger, try wearing tennis shoes, boots or any other "large" shoe.</p>
<p>Believe it or not, your hair helps you how to look taller. By wearing your hair long, you blur the space between your ears and shoulders, which makes your neck look shorter. </p>
<p>Maintaining an upright posture will also improve your height. Having a straight back with shoulders back not only makes you look taller, but it makes your core muscles, back and bones stronger, helping you maintain more of your height as you age.</p>
<p>Most importantly, attitude is everything for gaining height. It's easier said than done, I know, but exuding confidence can do wonders for your self image. When you are smiling, positive, and professional, people notice this and respond to it. </p>
<p>In contrast, if you are miserable, uncertain, and negative, those you interact with will notice this as well, and it will affect your appearance of how to look taller.</p>

<p>Chaga grows as a black cankerous mass on birch, dead or living. It may rarely be found on beech, elm, ash or hornbeam as well.</p>
<p>In Europe and Asia, chaga has been used for centuries to treat cancers of the heart and liver, digestive ailments, and tuberculosis. [121]</p>
<p>The black "skin" was removed and the lighter inside boiled as tea. Being such a compact natural medicine made it a valuable, portable remedy for healers of old.</p>
<p>Modern research on chaga has mainly focused on its potential application as an anti-cancer remedy. In Russia, this usage was already approved as early as 1955 to treat lung, stomach, breast and cervical cancers. [122]</p>
<p>One modern study from 1998 showed that chaga extract did in fact inhibit growth of cervical cancer cell lines under lab conditions. [123] Another study from 1995 reported that an isolate of the active compound betulin first inhibited growth of melanoma cells in a lab, and then killed them. [124, 25]</p>
<p>Other research papers also confirm that some of the active compounds of chaga help retard the growth of cancer cells. [125, 126]</p>
<p>Betulin is a medically active compound from the birch tree that gets concentrated in the black outer skin of the chaga mushroom, which has been found to contain 30% betulin, [127] whereas the inside of the chaga mushroom contains fungal lanostanes. It would therefore be suggested that chaga tea is better made from the whole mushroom, including the black skin.</p>
<p>Even better are chaga extracts that are made with not only the whole mushroom but also the mycelium, because the mycelium contains higher levels of medicinal proteins than the fruit body of the mushroom.</p>
<p>Other researchers have found chaga extract to be potently anti-viral. Two studies in 1996 found it to have an inhibitory effect on both influenza [127] and HIV. [128] Perhaps it does so by helping to stimulate the body's natural immune functions, something that was first confirmed in 2002 and then again in 2005, [25, 129] and which may also help explain the historical use of chaga mushroom as an anti-inflammatory. [130]</p>
<p>An alcohol extraction of chaga was reported to lower elevated blood sugar levels. [131] Chaga also contains powerful antioxidants. [132, 133]</p>
<p>As an amusing aside not related to human health, Siberian chaga may even be used as a tree medicine. Paul Stamets relates a story of a Quebec arborist using a chaga poultice to heal chestnut blight. Not only does it cure the tree, but the tree even becomes resistant to further infections of blight after having been treated. [134]</p>
<p>Finally, in the book <i><u>Mycelium Running</u></i>, Paul Stamets lists the following additional areas of research on chaga with positive results: Bacteria; uterine cancer; liver conditions. [134]</p>
